Award-Winning Poet Geffrey Davis to Visit Savannah State University for Poetry Reading and Craft Talk

Estuary Creative Arts Club welcomes acclaimed poet as part of the Georgia Poetry Circuit on November 12.

Savannah State University’s Estuary Creative Arts Club will welcome nationally acclaimed poet Geffrey Davis on Thursday, November 12, 2026, for a special poetry reading and craft talk presented as part of the Georgia Poetry Circuit. The events are free and open to the public, offering students, writers, and members of the Savannah community an opportunity to engage with one of today’s distinguished contemporary poetic voices.

Davis will present a craft talk at 2 p.m. at the Library Art Gallery in Asa H. Gordon Library on the Savannah State University campus. Later that evening, he will give a public poetry reading at 6:30 p.m. at The Book Lady Bookstore, located at 6 E. Liberty Street in historic downtown Savannah.

A recipient of the prestigious James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets and a Pushcart Prize, Davis is the author of One Wild Word Away, Night Angler, and Revising the Storm. His fourth poetry collection, No Good Ghost, is forthcoming from BOA Editions. He is also co-author, with poet F. Douglas Brown, of the chapbook Begotten.

Davis’s work has appeared in The Atlantic, The Nation, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and Poetry Magazine, among other publications. His literary achievements include fellowships from Bread Loaf, Cave Canem, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Whiting Foundation, the latter recognizing his involvement with The Prison Story Project, an initiative that empowers incarcerated individuals to reclaim their stories through writing.

Davis currently teaches in the University of Arkansas’s Program in Creative Writing and Translation. He also serves as core faculty at the Rainier Writing Workshop’s low-residency MFA program and as poetry editor of Iron Horse Literary Review.

The visit is part of the Georgia Poetry Circuit, a consortium of ten Georgia colleges and universities dedicated to bringing poets of national and international reputation to communities throughout the state. Through public readings, workshops, and conversations with students, the Circuit expands access to contemporary literature and creates meaningful opportunities for engagement between established writers and emerging voices.

For Estuary Creative Arts Club, the event reflects its commitment to fostering creative expression, literary exploration, and community engagement at Savannah State University. Through arts programming, educational events, and collaborative experiences, the club works to

cultivate a vibrant creative culture on campus while strengthening connections with Savannah’s broader artistic community.

Free transportation will be available for Savannah State students attending the evening reading. A shuttle will depart from behind Kennedy Hall at 5:30 p.m. Students should email fariesc@savannahstate.edu to reserve a seat or may simply show up.
