The Savannah State University delegation during SSU Day at the Capitol on Feb. 11, 2026.On Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the halls of the Georgia State Capitol echoed with Tiger pride as Savannah State University (SSU) leadership, students, faculty, staff, and alumni gathered for the annual SSU Day at the

Capitol. Arriving by 8:30 a.m., the SSU delegation stood as a distinguished collective under Atlanta’s historic Gold Dome. More than 120 students, faculty, staff, and alumni were in attendance.
The day served as a powerful platform for the SSU family to rekindle connections, engage with state legislators, and advocate for the continued growth of Georgia’s oldest public Historically Black College or University (HBCU).
For many students, the event provided more than just a networking opportunity. It offered a masterclass in civic engagement. Participants received a firsthand look at the inner workings of state government, from the intricacies of the legislative process to the complexities of budget allocation.
“This day represents a bridge between the classroom and the Capitol,” said SSU President Dr. Jermaine Whirl. “By witnessing the legislative process firsthand, our students are learning how to shape the future of Georgia. It is a proud moment for the entire SSU family to stand together under the Gold Dome and advocate for the next generation of leaders.”
SSU continues to ensure that the voices of its community are heard where it matters most. Furthermore, the presence of alumni from across Georgia underscored the university’s far-reaching impact.
“I was honored to be a part of this event and to represent our university at the Georgia Capitol,” said Zaylen Gates, SSU Student Government Association president. “I was very excited to meet some of the legislators and learn about how the state government works. This is the kind of experience that you can’t get in a classroom. It was also great meeting some of the SSU alumni who traveled from around the state to be here today.”
The event remains a cornerstone of the university’s commitment to leadership development and advocacy, reinforcing the message that Savannah State is not just an institution of higher learning, but a vital pillar of the Georgia community.
