Dr. Philip Omunga, Professor of Political Science and Public Affairs and Faculty Senate President (left), received the Faculty Service Excellence Award from SSU President Jermaine Whirl.Savannah State University (SSU) proudly recognized two esteemed faculty members for their outstanding contributions to the university during the recent Spring Honors Convocation. Dr. Antonio Velazquez, Professor of Civil Engineering Technology, received the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award, and Dr. Philip Omunga, Professor of Political Science and Public Affairs and Faculty Senate President, was awarded the Faculty Service Excellence Award.
Dr. Velazquez was recognized for his innovative, student-centered teaching approach. The Faculty Teaching Excellence Award honors educators who employ best practices across both in-person and online learning environments, while
integrating creative instructional technologies. Dr. Velazquez has elevated curriculum design, enhanced student engagement, and provided impactful academic advising and mentorship. His commitment to delivering meaningful, transformative learning experiences continues to shape the SSU academic community.
“I’m truly honored by this recognition,” said Dr. Velazquez. “My students inspire me every day to explore new ways to teach and connect. Teaching is more than a profession—it’s a calling, and I’m grateful to help guide our students on their academic journey.”
Dr. Philip Omunga, who serves in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, received the Faculty Service Excellence Award for his sustained leadership and commitment to student success. This award honors faculty who demonstrate exemplary service through research, community engagement, mentoring, and professional collaboration. Dr. Omunga has played a pivotal role in supporting student research, coordinating academic projects, and fostering partnerships with local employers and organizations.
