Journalism and Mass Communications

The department’s mission is to develop students in journalism and mass communications in a student-centered environment that fosters an understanding of African American and other diverse cultures in the world, prepared to integrate multiple skill sets suitable for further academic advancement or for local, national, and global professional employment in an ever-changing media landscape.

In the state of Georgia, only three universities are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (): University of Georgia, Savannah State University, and just recently, University of West Georgia. JMC has been accredited since 2007.

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communications (JMC) offers courses leading to a baccalaureate degree (BA.)

Mass Communication

Designated by the university as a “Center of Excellence,” the department strives to provide a liberal arts preparation that incorporates multimedia, digital communication, strategic communication, film, African Americans in the media, entertainment, sports, and history. The department’s curriculum enables students to excel and compete in the media industry.

Film

The SSU certificate in film is designed for students who want to pursue a BA in Mass Communications with a film emphasis, but will complete only three hours on of internship/practicum internship, COMM 4902, professional internship, instead of the six hours required by the Georgia Film Academy certification. Students pursuing this certificate should follow the regular BA in Mass Communications degree grid and use this certificate in lieu of a minor.

Public Relations

The certificate in public relations and public affairs prepares students to pursue a career that blends the principles of public relations with public affairs. A student who chooses to pursue this certificate will be trained to work in media relations in governmental and non-governmental organizations and follow careers such as campaign managers, communications specialists, community organizers, media relations, social advocates, etc.
