Savannah State Graduates Making an Impact in Government

Savannah State University (SSU) has a rich history of cultivating leaders who have significantly impacted government and public service. Graduates from SSU’s political science program have consistently demonstrated a commitment to civic engagement and leadership, translating their academic experiences into influential roles within various levels of government.

Edna Branch Jackson

A 1968 graduate with a B.S. in Sociology and a 1972 M.Ed. in Political Science Education from SSU, Jackson became the first African American woman elected as Mayor of Savannah, serving from 2012 to 2015. She has also been a member of the Georgia House of Representatives for District 165 since 2021.

Amelia Boynton Robinson

Attending SSU before transferring to Tuskegee University, Boynton Robinson was a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement and played a key role in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches.

Captain Donnie Cochran

An SSU alumnus, Cochran became the first African American pilot to fly with the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels and later served as a professor of Naval Science at Florida A&M University and Florida State University.

Felicia Bell, Ph.D.

Earning her B.A. in History from SSU, Dr. Bell has served as a senior advisor at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, contributing to national cultural preservation and education.
