The Department of Teacher Education offers a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSED)

The Middle Grades Education program at Savannah State University is dedicated to preparing future educators who are passionate about making an impact on students in grades 4-8. This program focuses on equipping teacher candidates with the specialized knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to foster academic success and personal growth among young adolescents. Students choose two subject areas—math, science, social studies, or English language arts—to develop expertise in core content areas essential for middle school teaching. Through a blend of coursework, field experience, and mentorship, students gain the competencies required for teaching in diverse educational settings.

Department of Teacher Education

The Department of Teacher Education offers a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSED) in Middle Grades English/Language Arts and Social Studies (grades 4-8), and Middle Grades Math and Sciences (grades 4-8), secondary education programs (grades 6-12) in Biology Education and Mathematics Education, and a BSED in Engineering, Technology Education (grades P-12). Teacher preparation programs leading to state certification are approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC). Students who wish to become teacher candidates must meet GaPSC requirements throughout the program, which includes a separate application process for admission to the Teacher Preparation Program. Students who are in the BS programs in Mathematics or Biology who are in good standing can apply to the Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program to add on teacher certification while earning their bachelor’s degree. Students with qualifying GPAs may apply for a $10,000 Noyce Scholarship. (Select the Noyce Teacher Scholarship tab on the navigational panel for more information).

Graduate students or STEM professionals with a BS degree in  Biology, Mathematics, or Engineering can apply to the Post-baccalaureate Non-degree Teacher Certification Program. Accepted students may be eligible to apply to the Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program as post-baccalaureate students.

A Blend of Foundational Education Courses

Students in the Middle Grades Education program study a blend of foundational education courses, teaching exceptional learners, and specialized subject area instruction in middle grades language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies.

Key courses include:

  • EDUC 2110 – Foundations of Education: An introductory course that covers the history, philosophy, and structure of education in the United States.
  • EDUC 2120 – Exploring Socio-Cultural Perspectives on Diversity: Examines diverse social and cultural factors impacting student learning and classroom dynamics.
  • EDUC 2130 – Exploring Teaching and Learning: Focuses on understanding diverse learning processes, classroom management strategies, and student motivation techniques.
  • EDUC 2140 – The Science of Reading: Provides an in-depth understanding of evidence-based reading instruction, emphasizing phonics, comprehension strategies, and literacy development in young adolescents.

Students complete over 900 hours of hands-on teaching experience, ensuring they are ready to lead their own classrooms upon graduation. Each course is designed to build the pedagogical knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed in real-world educational settings.
