Savannah State University is pleased to announce that student-athlete Johan Sandoval has been released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention and reunited with his family.
Throughout this process, the University remained in close communication with Johan’s family and legal counsel while respecting federal privacy laws and the integrity of the legal process. Following a thorough review, the University confirmed that it accurately prepared and submitted all required documentation based on the information available to it. The documentation that became the subject of this matter was not provided to Savannah State University by Johan’s previous institution.
“Our foremost concern has always been Johan’s well-being,” said Dr. Jermaine Whirl, President of Savannah State University. “We are grateful for this positive outcome and look forward to welcoming Johan back to campus. He is a valued member of the Tiger family, and we remain committed to supporting him as he continues his academic journey and competes as a member of our baseball program.”
The University extends its sincere appreciation to Johan’s family, legal counsel, and the many students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, advocacy organizations, and elected officials who offered encouragement, support, and assistance throughout this process. Their collective efforts and concern reflected the strength of the Savannah State community and its commitment to the success and well-being of its students.
As Johan and his family continue to navigate any remaining legal or administrative matters, Savannah State University asks that their privacy be respected.
Savannah State University remains committed to fostering a welcoming environment where all students have the opportunity to succeed academically, personally, and professionally.
