Savannah State to Celebrate 136 Years of Legacy, Leadership and Impact at Founders Day

Distinguished alumna Dr. Pearl Dowe returns as keynote speaker and recipient of SSU’s highest honor; nominations open for Cyrus G. Wiley Distinguished Alumni Award

Founders Day 2026

Savannah State University (SSU) will celebrate 136 years of expanding opportunity, preparing leaders and transforming lives at its annual Founders Day observance on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. in Tiger Arena.

This year’s celebration will feature a homecoming for Dr. Pearl Dowe, a 1994 SSU graduate and senior vice provost for Academic Affairs at Emory University. Dowe will deliver the keynote address and receive the Richard R. Wright, Sr. Award of Excellence, Savannah State’s highest honor.

A distinguished scholar and higher education leader, Dowe embodies the promise and possibility of a Savannah State education. Her journey from SSU student to national academic leader reflects the university’s enduring mission to prepare graduates whose leadership shapes institutions and strengthens communities.

Named in honor of Savannah State’s founding president, the Richard R. Wright, Sr. Award of Excellence recognizes exceptional leadership and service across social, educational and civic arenas. Dowe’s recognition connects the university’s founding vision with the accomplishments of an alumna carrying that legacy forward.

Founders Day brings together students, faculty, staff, alumni and supporters to honor the institution’s beginnings and celebrate the generations who have shaped its progress. The observance is also a call to carry that work forward, strengthening Savannah State’s impact for the students and communities it serves.

“For 136 years, Savannah State has opened doors to opportunity and prepared graduates to lead with purpose,” said Dr. Jermaine Whirl, president of Savannah State University. “Dr. Pearl Dowe’s journey speaks to the power of that mission. She has carried the promise of her SSU education into a remarkable career of scholarship and leadership, and we are proud to welcome her home. As we honor our founders, we also celebrate the people who are writing Savannah State’s next chapter.”
