Dr. Cora Thompson, interim dean and associate professor in Savannah State University’s College of Education, has published her first children’s book, Cora and Angel’s Furr-tastic Friendship – a heartfelt tribute to her beloved dog, Angel. Inspired by their deep bond, the book honors Angel’s memory while fostering literacy among young readers.
A 1980 SSU alumna, Thompson has produced a work that serves as an educational tool that strongly emphasizes literacy and reading comprehension and aligns with the Georgia Department of Education’s House Bill 538 (Georgia Early Literacy Act), which prioritizes the science of reading in classrooms.
By incorporating strategies that encourage comprehension and personal connection, the book offers children both an engaging story and a valuable learning experience. The book is illustrated by fellow SSU alum Kiera Cunningham, ’23, who also celebrates her first published work.
Throughout her career, Dr. Thompson has served in numerous roles, including classroom teacher, Early Intervention Program Lead Teacher, 21st Century Afterschool Site Coordinator, English Language Arts Resource Teacher, and District Differentiation Specialist. Over time, her mission has remained the same: to inspire, challenge, and prepare teachers to meet the diverse needs of today’s learners.
Dr. Thompson is deeply committed to service, faith, and community. She is an active member of several organizations, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc.; the National Council of Negro Women; the National Coalition of 100 Black Women; Phi Delta Kappa International; and the Pi Lambda Theta Education Honor Society. In every space she occupies, she brings her unwavering dedication to mentorship and educational excellence.
