State Authorization

nc sara primaryThe U.S. Department of Education requires compliance with state regulations of any state in which SSU provides distance education for students. To facilitate this compliance with state regulations, SSU has joined the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (NC-SARA).

This agreement allows SSU to offer distance education to other member states. To find out if your state of residence is a member state before applying to a program with SSU, please visit the NC-SARA website, https://nc-sara.org/.

In compliance with State Authorization for the delivery of distance education, online degree and certificate programs may not be available in all states. Certain programs may require practicums, guided experiential learning, proctored examinations, internships, or student teaching which trigger State Authorization.

Savannah States Bachelor of Science in Education (BSED)
At this time, SSU is unable to provide a state-by-state list detailing the states this degree program meets or does not meet teacher certification requirements. Therefore, we are not able to enroll any out of state students into this degree program and can currently only enroll students residing in the state of Georgia.

Savannah States Master’s in Social Work (MSW)
The SSU MSW program prepares students for the Georgia Social Work Licensure exam (LMSW). The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) is an organization that designs or writes the licensure exam that individuals will take for the LMSW credential in a particular state. Most states use the ASWB’s LMSW exam for licensure but not all of them. Each state’s licensure board is different and has different requirements. While the exam is standardized, other requirements, such as education, supervision, and work experience, can vary by state. Click this link at the ASWB website to determine which states utilize the LMSW exam and to obtain detailed Social Work licensure requirements by state.

Complaint Process For Non-Georgia Resident Students Taking Online Classes At SSU
Under U.S. Department of Education rules, each state must have a student complaint process for institutions receiving Title IV funds. In Georgia, GA-SARA oversees written and signed complaints against SARA-approved degree-granting institutions that remain unresolved at the institutional level. For details, see GA-SARA Student Complaint Rules and submit complaints through the GA-SARA Online Student Complaint Form.
