SAVANNAH, Ga.: Savannah State University’s Visual and Performing Arts Program will present Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, a Players by the Sea production directed by Professor Tomica S. Jenkins, November 12–14, 2026, at the Kennedy Fine Arts Center Theatre.
Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. on November 12 and 13, followed by a 2 p.m. matinee on November 14.
Set on Chicago’s South Side, Hansberry’s landmark drama follows the Younger family as they weigh competing dreams after receiving a life insurance payment. Their decisions reveal the tensions between personal ambition and family responsibility while confronting the racial barriers that shape their opportunities.
The family’s aspirations range from owning a home to building a business and pursuing an education. As those goals collide, Hansberry’s characters must decide what they are willing to risk, what they owe one another, and how to move forward in the face of racial discrimination.
Through its portrayal of a family’s hopes for a better future, A Raisin in the Sun invites audiences to consider enduring questions of dignity, identity, belonging, and the meaning of the American dream. The production offers an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and the Savannah community to experience a powerful work of American theatre together.
Admission is free for SSU students, faculty, and staff with university identification. Tickets are $5 for other students with identification and $10 for general admission.
