Marine Sciences Funded Programs

Multiple opportunities in collaborative research are available. All marine science majors complete original research, produce a scientific report of findings and present their results in a public forum on campus. Students have access to the university wet laboratory, boats, dock, labs, oceanographic instrumentation and computing facilities. Several undergraduates present research findings at regional and national professional society conferences each year.

Students and faculty carry out research and ecosystem monitoring in the Savannah River, Wilmington River, salt marsh and tidal creek environments, and on Tybee Beach with collaborators at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Paid undergraduate research internship opportunities are available through the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Education for Undergraduates (REU) and NSF Research Initiation Award (RIA) Programs. Internships are carried out at SSU, SkIO and with local community partners.

Paid graduate student research fellowships are available through the NOAA LMRCSC Program. The graduate program in marine sciences is a thesis-based degree program with both full-time and part-time students.
