Noyce Teacher Scholarship
The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program “responds to the critical need for K-12 teachers of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by encouraging talented STEM students and professionals to pursue teaching careers in elementary and secondary schools.
Noyce scholarships at Savannah State University provide tuition support to students majoring in biology, math, and engineering, who want to teach. Noyce scholars also receive specialized mentoring programs, funding to join professional organizations, and professional development. They become members of a vibrant ongoing education community consisting of teachers, engineers, mathematics educators, biology educators, and administrators that comes together regularly to do discuss teaching and learning in STEM Education. Noyce scholars commit to teaching for two years in a high-need school or district.
Scholarship and stipend recipients are required to complete two years of teaching in a high-need school district for each year of support. The program seeks to increase the number of K-12 teachers with strong STEM content knowledge who teach in high-need school districts – nsfnoyce.org

High-Need School Districts
A high-need school district is one that meets at least one of the following criteria:
- The district has at least one school in which 50 percent or more of the enrolled students are eligible for participation in the free and reduced lunch program established by the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act (42U.S.C.1751 et seq.).
- The district has at least one school in which:
-
- more than 34 percent of the academic classroom teachers at the secondary level (across all academic subjects) do not have an undergraduate degree with a major or minor in, or graduate degree in, the academic field in which they teach the largest percentage of their classes; Or
- more than 34 percent of the teachers in two academic departments do not have an undergraduate degree with a major or minor in, or a graduate degree in the academic field in which they teach the largest percentage of their classes.
- The district has at least one school whose teacher attrition rate has been 15 percent or greater over the last three school years.
Many of the school districts in Georgia qualify under one or more of these criteria, however it is ultimately your responsibility to confirm that your district qualifies.
Noyce Scholars may choose to teach in schools outside of Georgia, as long as the Scholar becomes certified in that state, and the school district meets the Hig-Need School District criteria.

Noyce Leadership Team
Kisha Cunningham, Ph.D., Project Director/Principal Investigator
Mulatu Lemma, Ph.D., Co-PI
Mohamad Mustafa, Ph.D., Co-PI
Asad Yousuf, Ph.D., Co-PI
The SSU Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program consists of math, engineering and education faculty with the content knowledge competencies, management and administrative skills, as well as, experience to accomplish the project goals. Every member of the Noyce team will serve as advisors/mentors throughout the academic year for the Noyce Scholars (Summer Interns, Scholarship/Stipend Recipients).
The Noyce team will develop an assessment tool to track the progress of each Noyce Scholar’s post-induction success. They meet monthly to review and critique all data and results achieved to date and coordinate future activities, including any corrective actions that are needed.
Principal Investigator (PI): Kisha Cunningham, Ph.D., assistant professor of education, oversees the entire project. Cunningham has extensive experience in education preparation program development and STEM education. She oversees the Noyce Scholar selection process, oversees the attainment of program objectives, supervises the project coordinator, manages the project budget, conduct sprogram evaluations and submits reports to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and university senior administration.
Co-PI: Mulatu Lemma, Ph.D., professor of mathematics, focused on coordinating mathematics faculty involvement in recruitment and mentoring, and the 6-12 professional development workshops for new mathematics content. He coordinates program activities with the Noyce partners, with Savannah-Chatham County Public School Systems (SCCPSS) and with the advisory committee. Lemma has extensive program administration experience as PI of the PRISM grant. He assists in coordinating between the program partners. In addition, Lemma develops the math component of the summer education internship program.
Co-PI: Mohamad Mustafa, Ph.D., chair and professor of civil engineering technology, coordinates the engineering faculty in recruitment, advising and mentoring of rising engineering sophomore interns and STEM professionals. In addition, Mustafa develop and implements the engineering component of the summer education internship program.
Co-PI: Asad Yousuf, Ph.D., professor of electrical engineering technology, leads the participation of the engineering faculty in mentoring and the professional development workshops. He also coordinates the Noyce Scholars field and clinical experiences, and their professional learning. Yousuf is also involved in the execution of the summer education internship program.
