Outreach to Local Schools and Teaching Experiences

The SSU Marine Science Department participates in marine education and outreach throughout the Savannah area and surrounding cities.

The SSU Marine Science Department participates in marine education and outreach throughout the Savannah area and surrounding cities through community events, local school visits, and Coast Camp. SSU Marine Science students have the opportunity to reinforce their scientific knowledge by teaching younger students at outreach events. Graduate and Undergraduate students are trained in science communication through our outreach activities with community partners.

Marine Science Club

The organization welcomes all Savannah State University students who are passionate about Marine Science, whether they’re exploring the field or just curious to learn more. Members connect with like-minded peers, engage in hands-on activities, and participate in events that promote environmental awareness on campus and in the community.

SSU Coast Camp

SSU Coast Camp program is to provide real science experiences for the young people who participate in our program. Each camp is designed to provide time in the classroom with hands-on instruction as well as outdoor field work in the marine sciences.

In Search of Earth's Secrets

Savannah State University is proud to partner with is proud to host the In Search of Earth's Secrets traveling exhibit. The In Search of Earth’s Secrets exhibit allows audiences to enjoy hands-on experience while learning about exciting science topics researched by the JOIDES Resolution such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Southern Stingray Bowl

The Southern Stingray Bowl is a regional competition for high school students in the Georgia and South Carolina region. Historic Savannah State University hosts this year's Southern Stingray Bowl. Savannah State University has been the host site for the Southern Stingray Bowl since 2010.

Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education

The purpose of this project is to lay the groundwork to meet three critical urban needs using urban aquaponics: vacant land, nutrient enrichment and urban food deserts (UFDs). Working group meetings were held weekly in 2021. Participants participated in the journey of setting up an aquaponics system.

Field Trips

We welcome schools and community groups to come experience a field trip at our research facility where they can see our science labs, visit the dock on the marsh, and learn about marine science through hands-on activities.

SCUTES

SSU Marine Science has partnered with Student Collaborating to Undertake Tracking Efforts for Sturgeon (SCUTES). This NOAA Fisheries outreach program is designed to teach students about conservation efforts surrounding the Atlantic and Shortnose Sturgeon.

  • High school seniors should apply for the NOAA CSC Geosciences Bridge Program during the summer.
  • Participate in the SSU Coast Camp each summer.
