Summer Internships at External Labs and Businesses
Contact your faculty advisor for information on summer internships at labs and industries nationwide in your area of interest. A good compilation of summer internships is by NSF, which funds hundreds of REU (summer research training for undergraduates) programs nationwide. You can search on NSF REU programs by discipline here.
Savannah State STEM Scholarships
U.S. Department of Education HBCU Masters in STEM
- Goal: Prepare minority or low-income graduate students for successful STEM careers.
- Number supported per year: 10
- Eligibility requirements: Students in SSU's Masters in Marine Science and Masters in Mathematics programs.
- Support provided: Financial support (stipends, tuition support), research training and mentoring, and travel support.

NIH NIBIB ESTEEMED - ADISRE
- Goal: Increase the diversity of the biomedical research (Ph.D.) workforce
- Number supported per year: Seven new cohort of incoming freshmen recruited each year
- Eligibility requirements: Incoming freshmen who have declared major in biology, chemistry, math or forensic science and intend to pursue research career (Ph.D.) and who meet GPA/SAT requirements
- Support provided: Support is provided for freshman/sophomore years. Scholarship, travel support, mentored research training, professional development.

NSF S-STEM
- Goal: Support academically talented students with financial needs to attain STEM bachelor's degrees.
- Number supported: Two cohorts of 15 scholars per cohort
- Eligibility requirements: Declared STEM major, incoming freshman, minimum GPA of 2.75 or 1100 combined SAT or 21 ACT, financially-needy - Pell eligible
- Support provided: Scholarship ($5,500/scholar/year), freshman learning community support - shared classes, study halls, tutoring, socials, fields trips, other professional development, mentoring and support for travel to conference

NSF HBCU-UP Implementation Project, “Early Interdisciplinary Applied Strategies to Strengthen STEM Education and Research, iApply”
- Goal: Increase the number of SSU graduates who earn STEM degrees and enter STEM workforce through immersion in hands-on, interdisciplinary research and projects including 3D lab training
- Number supported per year: 15
- Eligibility requirements:
- Declared STEM major at SSU
- Minimum GPA of 2.8 or higher
- Underrepresented (UR) status
- U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident
- Full-time student

- Benefits to Selected Scholars: Financial support, research training and mentoring, and travel support. Financial support is $4,500 over a 12-month period ($750 for each academic year semester and $3000 for summer research).

NIH MARC U-STAR
- Goal: Prepare minority underrepresented students for biomedical research careers (Ph.D.)
- Number supported per year: 5
- Eligibility requirements: Honors juniors/seniors, GPA of 3.25, declared major in biology, chemistry, forensic science or math, intend to enter biomedical research scientist workforce (Ph.D.), intend to pursue biomedical Ph.D. and research career.
- Support provided: Financial support (stipends/tuition support), mentoring and research training by a dedicated faculty mentor in their field, travel support.

NSF Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (PSLSAMP)
- Goal: Increase the number of SSU students who attain STEM bachelor's degrees and advance to STEM jobs/graduate programs
- Number supported per year: 30
- Eligibility requirements: STEM major, GPA of 2.75
- Support provided: Financial support, mentoring, research training, travel support

NSF Noyce
- Goal: Prepare STEM majors for STEM teaching careers
- Number supported per year: 15
- Eligibility requirements: Juniors/seniors who are STEM majors in biology, math or engineering technology, and who are committed to a STEM teaching career in high-need secondary school
- Support provided: Financial support ($10,000/year), mentoring, professional development, field experience

NSF REU - Bridge to Research in Marine Sciences, a Summer REU Program
- Goal: Increase the number of students who enter STEM careers
- Number supported per year: 10
- Eligibility requirements: Open to undergraduates nationwide
- Support provided: Eight-week summer REU program in marine sciences on the SSU campus. Program provides research training including an ocean cruise. Program partners are Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary, and UGA MAREX Aquarium.

NOAA/University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) - Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center (LMRCSC)
- Goal: Support the goals of the LMRCSC, a consortium of UMES (lead), SSU, Delaware State University, Hampton University, Oregon State University, University of Miami and University of Maryland.
- Number served per year: Six undergraduate/graduate students
- Support provided: Support SSU Marine Sciences research faculty in fisheries-related projects, support undergraduate and graduate students working in LMRCSC studies at SSU and NOAA partner labs, support interdisciplinary studies and distance-learning course offerings with partnering institutions

Social Work Scholarships/Fellowships
Title IV-E Child Welfare Education Program
- Goal: Prepare bachelor's and master's of social work degree students for careers in Georgia's public child welfare system. This program is funded by the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services through a sub-award from Georgia State University.
- Number supported per year: Two bachelor's and two master's degree students per year
- Support provided: Students take specialized courses, receive financial support, receive licensing prep support, and complete internships with the Department of Family and Children Services.

Additional Research Training and Internship Opportunities
SSU has additional funded projects (whose main goal is to conduct basic research or develop new curriculum) which also support undergraduates and high school students in research training and internships. Please contact faculty in Biology (Dr. Takayuki Nitta), Chemistry (Dr. Kai Shen, Dr. Pascal Binda), Marine Science (Dr. Amanda Kaltenberg), Environmental Science (Dr. Kenneth Sajwan), and Mathematics (Dr. Agegnehu Atena, Dr. Chowdhury) for information on research training opportunities/internships with their programs.
Additional Scholarship & Fellowship Opportunities
In addition to the above scholarship programs which are awarded directly to SSU, students are encouraged to apply to fellowships and scholarships on an individual basis, to support their graduate studies or to support their training at top-tier labs.
NSF Graduate Fellowships
Students should apply by October of their senior year. Available to eligible STEM and social science majors. Provides 3 years of support for graduate studies, currently up to $138,000.
NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
Department of Defense STEM Scholarships
Department of Defense (DOD) provides funding at both graduate and undergraduate levels, including training at DOD labs. These highly competitive graduate fellowships have no service commitment.
Undergraduate scholarships (SMART program) provide internships at DOD labs and financial support; following graduation there is a service commitment through employment at DOD labs.
