Working with the University of Aruba in Oranjestad, Aruba, Dr. Vicki Brown and Dr. Del Bharath will study the role of policy and the media in refugee human rights. Aruba has embraced Venezuelan refugees through governmental programs to ensure both refugees and migrants feel at home and welcomed in Aruba. HIAS Aruba was founded in 2019 to promote economic inclusion for those fleeing their home countries.
Dr. Bharath will lead the team in discussing the differences in the policies between the government of the U.S. and the government in Aruba. Dr. Brown will work with students to identify the differences in media coverage and representation between the two countries. Together, the class will discover how policy and media can work for and against one another and how they both help or hinder their audiences.
The class will travel during summer 1 (May 22 - June 21).
