The history program offers a broad array of courses in American, African American, European, African, Asian and Latin American history. Engaged with an ethnically and culturally diverse faculty, students are expected to grasp balanced and international perspectives and understandings of the human past experiences. Graduates may work as an archivist, historic site interpreter, a records manager, a researcher or in a museum.

Mission

Students in the History Program are taught to consider the past from various perspectives, to think critically, investigate complex problems, and express themselves both through the spoken and written word. The program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to acquire a solid foundation of knowledge as it relates to the human past. Rigorous courses and internships led by experts in a variety of fields prepare graduates for careers as teachers, museum professionals, researchers, documentary filmmakers, historical interpreters, and beyond. Students also develop skills necessary for success in graduate school, on paths to become lawyers, professors, journalists, and public policy professionals. Ultimately, the History Program is dedicated to aiding students to better understand the world and their place in it – to learn about the past in order to build a better future.
