JMC Mission
The department’s mission is to develop students in journalism and mass communications in a student-centered environment that fosters an understanding of African American and other diverse cultures in the world, prepared to integrate multiple skill sets suitable for further academic advancement or for local, national, and global professional employment in an ever-changing media landscape.

ACEJMC Accreditation
In the state of Georgia, only three universities are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC): University of Georgia, Savannah State University, and just recently, University of West Georgia. JMC has been accredited since 2007.
JMC Advisory Board Members
The department’s advisory board represents professionals in print journalism, public relations/advertising, and radio/television. They advise the department on the efficacy of its curriculum, student internship opportunities, external fundraising, and current trends in professional media. The media professionals are from several states and are locally and nationally known.
