Family Education & Privacy Act
At Savannah State University, the provisions of the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protect educational records of students, confidential financial statements of parents, and confidential recommendations for employment and student admission.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 was designed to protect the privacy of educational records, to establish students' rights to inspect and review their records, and to provide guidelines for correcting inaccurate or misleading data through informal and formal hearings. Savannah State is in full compliance and informs students of the Act annually.
Policy and procedures of the Act are explained in detail in the Savannah State University and Procedure Manual, which may be found in hard copy in all major offices at the University. The manual also provides a directory of the specific student educational records maintained. After observing the Savannah State procedures for challenging a record, a student has the right to file complaints with the Faculty Educational Rights and Privacy Act Office of alleged compliance failures.
